πŸŒ³πŸ„The Capability Framework

The 12 Dimensions of Household Resilience

Every prepared household operates across twelve essential domains. Most neighborhoods already hold much of what they need β€” scattered across different homes, invisible to everyone. This framework makes those gaps visible and shows exactly how to fill them.

Why a Framework?

Without a framework, resilience becomes an overwhelming checklist. With one, you can see exactly where you are, what matters most for your context, and how products work together to fill specific gaps.

The 12-dimensional model isn't arbitrary - these are the fundamental domains that determine whether a household (or neighborhood) can maintain safety and comfort during extended disruptions.

The key insight: You don't need 100% in every domain. You need enough coverage across domains that your household can handle 72 hours, then scale toward 30 days, then coordinate with neighbors to reach indefinite capability.

Your Household Capability

After your assessment, this shows your exact position across all twelve domains

The Twelve Core Capabilities

Each dimension measures your household's current capability from 0.0 (none) to 1.0 (complete self-sufficiency). Most households start between 0.3-0.7 in different domains.

🏠
1

Shelter & Hospitality

Can you maintain safe, comfortable indoor conditions? Can you house additional people if needed? This covers heating/cooling backup, structural integrity, and guest capacity.

Key questions: Backup heating? Window integrity? Space for neighbors?
🌾
2

Food & Nutrition

Can you feed your household for extended periods? This includes stored food, preservation methods, and ideally some production capability (garden, sprouts, fermentation).

Key questions: 30-day food stores? Cooking without power? Growing capacity?
πŸ’§
3

Water Security

Can you source, store, and purify water? This covers both drinking water and sanitation needs. One of the most critical gaps in suburban environments.

Key questions: Storage capacity? Purification methods? Alternative sources?
🚽
4

Sanitation & Hygiene

Can you manage waste and maintain health without municipal systems? This includes toilets, trash, laundry, and basic hygiene when water or sewage systems fail.

Key questions: Toilet alternatives? Waste management? Basic hygiene supplies?
⚑
5

Energy & Power

Can you generate, store, and distribute electricity? This covers everything from phone charging to refrigeration to power tools. Solar + battery is the most common solution.

Key questions: Battery backup? Solar panels? Generator + fuel storage?
βš•οΈ
6

Health & Medical

Can you handle minor injuries and manage ongoing health needs? This includes first aid supplies, prescription backups, and basic medical knowledge.

Key questions: First aid trained? Medication backups? Dental emergency kit?
πŸ›‘οΈ
7

Security & Safety

Can you protect your household and coordinate emergency response? This covers fire safety, basic security measures, and knowing how to respond to different scenarios.

Key questions: Fire extinguishers? Emergency plans? Neighbor coordination?
πŸ“‘
8

Communication & Information

Can you coordinate with neighbors and access information without cell service or internet? This includes radios, mesh networks, and agreed-upon check-in protocols.

Key questions: Backup communications? Weather radio? Neighbor protocols?
🚲
9

Transportation & Mobility

Can you move people and resources without relying on gas stations or supply chains? This covers everything from bicycles to fuel storage to knowing alternate routes.

Key questions: Bikes maintained? Fuel reserves? Walking/biking routes mapped?
πŸ”¨
10

Tools & Manufacturing

Can you repair, maintain, and create things? This covers hand tools, basic materials, and the knowledge to fix what breaks or make what you need.

Key questions: Tool collection? Repair skills? Material stockpile?
🀝
11

Governance & Coordination

Can you organize decisions and coordinate with neighbors? This covers agreed-upon protocols, resource sharing systems, and basic group decision-making.

Key questions: Neighbor contact list? Resource map? Decision protocols?
🎨
12

Culture & Recreation

Can you maintain meaning and morale? This covers games, books, music, crafts, and rituals that keep spirits high when routines are disrupted.

Key questions: Entertainment without screens? Meaningful rituals? Community bonds?

Beyond the Basics

The 12 core dimensions track your current household capability. Additional dimensions help us understand how that capability scales, connects with neighbors, and evolves over time.

πŸ“ˆScale & Time Horizon

Capability can exist at different scales: 72-hour (emergency), 30-day (extended disruption), 1-year (major supply chain failure), or indefinite (community self-sufficiency). Most suburban households can reach 72-hour capability quickly, while longer horizons require neighborhood coordination.

πŸ•ΈοΈNetwork Integration

Individual household capability multiplies when neighbors coordinate. Five neighbors with generators can power 8-10 homes. Three with water filtration can supply a block. This dimension tracks how well your street can pool resources.

πŸ”„Manufacturing Depth

Can you maintain and repair your systems? Can you create what you need? This measures the gap between consuming products and being able to produce them - from buying batteries to building battery systems.

🎯Practice & Activation

Owning equipment isn't the same as using it regularly. This tracks the gap between what you theoretically can do (you own a water filter) and what you actually practice (you filter water monthly and know the system inside out).

You Take the Assessment

A 3-minute household snapshot asks about your context: climate, housing type, household size, and current preparedness level. We use this to identify which gaps matter most for YOUR situation.

Example: Hot, dry climate + suburban home β†’ water storage becomes a priority gap.

You See Your Capability Map

We show you exactly where you are across all twelve domains. Not to make you anxious, but to make progress measurable. Most households discover they're stronger than they thought in some areas and have obvious gaps in others.

Example: Strong: Food (0.7), Energy (0.8). Gaps: Water (0.3), Communication (0.2).

Products Fill Specific Gaps

Every product in our catalog shows exactly which capability dimensions it affects and by how much. You see "This water filter + storage system moves your Water capability from 0.3 to 0.7."

Example: LifeStraw Mission (5L) + 2x Aqua-Tainer (7gal) = 0.4 increase in Water Security.

Coordination Multiplies Capability

Once you know your capabilities, we show you how they combine with neighbors. Three households with generators can power 8-10 homes. Coordination turns individual capability into neighborhood resilience.

Example: Your block: 5 households with solar β†’ can share power during multi-day outages.

From Framework to Products

Every product in our catalog is mapped into this 12-dimensional space. When you browse products, you see how each one affects your capability scores. When you complete your assessment, we show you products that fill YOUR specific gaps.

Why "Father Tree & Mother Mycelium"?

This framework emerged from a deeper pattern: hierarchical systems (Father Tree) excel at competitive resource generation, while network systems (Mother Mycelium) excel at cooperative distribution. Household resilience needs both - fierce capability building AND gentle coordination.
